3 History of science, history of the text

Thematics of research / Members / 2018–2022

The seminar "history of science, history of the text" is intended to continue and we will address the following topics, in order to prepare collective publications :

Temporality
Various documents bear the marks of scientific activities taking place in time, and their internal structure, even material traces sometimes reveal the intervention of actors operating at different times or throughout a period of time given. Whether it is the scale of a calculation or the production of a figure, or even that of the preparation of critical editions or the annotation, how can one exploit these traces of temporality ? This will be one of the issues at the heart of our collective work.

History and practice of editions
We will continue to explore this field of study, which has been particularly fruitful in our workshops Shaping the sciences of the ancient world ; text criticalisms, critical editions and translations of ancient and medieval scholarly texts (18th-20th century) . As a first step, we will finalize the book produced after these operations. Then we will look more specifically at how the editions represent digital scripts, formulas, ancient languages and the impact of these works on historiography.

In connection with the project "History and Philosophy of Mathematics, 19th–21st centuries", we will focus on the editions of complete works of mathematicians of the nineteenth century, but also more widely editions of ancient scientific texts, to study the methods of manufacture of these texts and the scientific practices developed to produce them.

Secondary Texts and Historiography.
We will continue the study of the so-called second science texts (paraphrase, quotation, commentary, encyclopedias) and the ways in which historiography has commented on them. In particular, we have a book in preparation on the comments.

Text parts.
We also intend to continue work on this theme, particularly fruitful, after the publication of our collective book on the subject.

– What do the material traits of the manuscripts document ?
We will look at the techniques of deciphering material traces of our sources, and how the history of science could exploit them.

Translation.
In this context, we intend to study the translations from a historical point of view and as a text, with a view to proposing a collective publication.

-
In relation with the sub-axis "Writings and uses of the past of sciences", as well as with "cultures, practices, work", we will look at the texts that respond to the judgments of actors in terms of "facility", "simplicity", "ease, "brevity."
