Presentation

The seminar is the meeting point between different SPHERE teams that are interested in mathematics. It fosters dialogue between philosophers and historians of mathematics while focusing on textual sources. Speakers are encouraged to make their sources available to the participants.

Résumé : Si les mathématiques sont le plus souvent appréhendées du point de vue de leur élaboration théorique, théoriciens et praticiens des mathématiques ont également eu historiquement recours à des instruments, dont les modes d’utilisation sont partie prenante du processus de théorisation. Il s’agira à la fois d’analyser comment les instruments ont pu être caractérisés mathématiquement dans des études d’objets spécifiques, et comment la pratique de ces instruments induit de nouveaux rapprochements théoriques.

Machines mathématiques

Session shared with séminaire « Machines et Imagination », organised by Maarten Bullynck, Pierre Cassou-Nogues, Marie-José Durand-Richard, Koen Vermeir

Résumé : Toute production de machine nourrit des récits de représentation sur ses possibilités, qui relèvent à la fois du rationnel et de l’imaginaire. Les machines mathématiques n’échappent pas à cette situation, et les représentations qu’elles induisent entrent en résonance ou en conflit avec les modes antérieurs d’inscription des mathématiques et des sciences dans le champ culturel et social. Dans l’un et l’autre cas – résonance ou conflit – , de nouvelles formes de représentation en sont issues, condition même de l’intégration de ces machines à l’activité mathématique.

Although the four arithmetic operations have been object of numerous theoretical contemplations, these contemplations have not been systematised nor compared for Chinese, Indian, and Mesopotamian texts.

Groupes et algèbres de Lie

Session together with séminaire « Riemann », organised by Christophe Eckes and Jean-Jacques Szczeciniarz

Présentation : Il s’agit tout d’abord de mesurer sur un plan conceptuel, théorique et méthodologique, l’écart qui sépare les travaux inauguraux de Lie sur les groupes continus de transformations et les articles de Weyl et de von Neumann qui ont joué un rôle déterminant dans la constitution d’une théorie « moderne » des groupes et des algèbres de Lie. Nous aborderons ensuite certains prolongements de cette théorie, en particulier la généralisation des transformations infinitésimales de Lie.
