Gravity and gauge theories from dimensionally extended topological invariants

by Gaston Giribet,

Rethinking Einstein’s theory of general relativity as a theory of topological quantities -instead of its natural interpretation as a theory of geometry- leads to a natural way of extending the theory of gravity to higher dimensions.
In this talk I will describe how the extension of gravity theory to higher-dimensional space-time can be systematically given in term of dimensionally extended topological invariants according to Chern-Weil theory. I will discuss how the extended theories of gravity obtained in this way emerge in string theory and M-theory scenarios, and, in addition, I will explain how this treatment permits to formulate theories of gravity that are actual gauge field theories.
